Gum Disease

Periodontal Care

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and is one of the most common conditions in our population. It is a disease that progresses and contributes to deteriorating oral health and overall health. It is caused by plaque and bacteria buildup that forms around the gum line and created pockets between teeth and gums.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Inflamed or receding gums
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Presence of bad breath
  • Pockets between the gums and tooth of 5mm or more
  • Loose teeth if in the late stage of the disease
  • Mostly painless

Periodontitis can often not be completely reversed, but with proper at-home care combined with in-office maintenance, we can help prevent the disease from progressing. We also offer Arestin and Atridox as effective antibiotic treatments. Both can be placed inside the infected periodontal pockets to eliminate infection of the gums.

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Gingivitis is a disease that can cause significant tooth and gum deterioration. A buildup of plaque and tartar allows bacteria to grow on the surfaces of the teeth. The bacteria will cause your gums to become inflamed and bleed. If left untreated, the condition will progressively worsen and become periodontitis.

Treatment for gingivitis is simple and performed right at our dental office. Dental prophy is performed ususally without any anesthesia. While the procedure is usually painless, advanced stages of gingivitis may make it necessary to numb the area for comfort. Scaling is the removal of the dental tartar from the tooth surfaces, and root planing is smoothing the root surfaces and removing the infected build-up of the root. Scaling and root planing is needed if there is periodontal disease which is usually acompanied with some level of bone loss which surrounds the teeth.
